Collection: Orange Wine

What is Orange wine? The way we like to explain it at Cellars is it’s white wine made in a red wine way. The colour and texture (officially known as tannin, that dry mouth feel you sometimes get with red wines) come from the skin of the grapes. The juice of the red grapes is left in contact with their skins. Typically, grapes for white wine are pressed so the juice is separated from the skins before it is fermented. This means that you can use red grapes to make white wine. For example, pinot noir grapes are often used to make champagne.

To make orange wine, you allow the juice of white grapes to ferment in contact with their skins for a few days to many months. This is why orange wine is also often called skin-contact wine. The longer the wine is left on the skins, the more pronounced and different the flavours that develop.

Orange wine can taste pretty unusual for a first-time drinker, but we find people can get hooked straight away! If you're a novice orange wine drinker looking to try something new or a seasoned pro we've got you covered with our selection of orange wines.
