El Montanista is a project from winemaker Pancho Bugallo. He has taken over old vineyards with an average age of over 80 years. In the past vineyards weren’t played with one single variety – and here the wine is a blend of different varieties, co-planted together in the same vineyard giving a unique take on the region’s soils, climate, and old-vine heritage.
All in all, this is a unique place to grow grapes, and combined with the old vine heritage, this gives a unique and characterful wine. It reminds me of some of the alpine wines of Europe – fresh and vibrant with crunchy red fruit, and very pretty aromatic detail -think dried oregano and pink peppercorns.
