Women of Wine
In a traditionally male-dominated industry, we want to celebrate and highlight women who are making great wine. Here, we present four wines from wineries led and and run by women, all at the very top of their game.
Riesling Kabinett, Sybille Kuntz
Bright and zesty with lime, citrus and minerals. This is from 2018 vintage and is developing very nicely in bottle. Sybille Crafts elegant and pure wines in the Mosel region of Germany.
Rose de Syrah, Smith-Chapel
This will be a summer smash-hit on the terrace in Peckham. Crunchy red fruits, a hint of spice and heaps of freshness define this wine. Michelle Smith is one half of the feted winemaking couple responsible for Beaujolais' Domaine Chapel, alongside her husband, David Smith. But here Michelle leads the way on their negociant project, Smith-Chapel. Here wines are bright and pure and offer delightful alternatives to the superlateive cru wines.
Sketta, Cantina Marilina
Cantina Marilina is based 45km South of Syracuse and run by sisters Marilina and Federica Patern, who have been farming organically since the vineyard was established in 2001. Their philosophy is simple: absolute respect for the earth. The climate in Sicily makes working with as little intervention as possible favourable, along with traditional winemaking techniques such as concrete tanks and extended skin maceration for the white wines.
Sketta is a Cellars classic – a superb orange wine that punches well above its weight and offers up aromas of apples, ginger, and spice.
SP68, Arianna Occhipinti
Arianna is without question, producing some of the most authentic, soulful wines out there. High up in the top tier of natural winemakers, she’s rightly developed a global following for these vivid, pure wines.
SP68 is a blend of Frappato & Nero d'Avola from Sicily. Bright, juicy, and pure, with lots of bright cherries, cranberries, and red currant on the nose. The palate is lithe, juicy, with quite a hit of tannins given its light appearance. Absolutely spot on with a simple plate of charcuterie.
