Le Pergole Torte, Montevertine, 2020, Montevertine
One of Italy’s most iconic wines, and the most beautiful rendition of Sangiovese I’ve ever tasted.

In 1967, Sergio Manetti established Montevertine in Radda, an elevated and rocky part of the Chianti Classico region, historically known as a challenging area for grape ripening. Nowadays, this location enjoys the region's longest growing seasons. Due to the old Chianti DOC regulations that mandated the inclusion of white grapes in the blend, Manetti chose not to classify his cult wines as Chianti Classico. However, these wines have become some of the most coveted by collectors worldwide. The winemaking is now overseen by oenologist Paolo Salvi, who carefully upholds the traditional methods established by his predecessor.
Thanks to the flexibility of using 100% Sangiovese, Manetti’s flagship wine, Le Pergole Torte, emerged as one of the earliest Super Tuscans and has since become one of Tuscany’s most iconic and consistently outstanding wines. Sourced from the estate’s oldest Sangiovese vines, the wine undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in cement tanks, followed by aging for one year in 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and another six months in seasoned French oak barrels. This is a long-lasting wine with deep aromas of vibrant cherry, dried flowers, cigar box, and earthy undertones. Full-bodied, with a rich, velvety texture and well-integrated tannins, it can be enjoyed young but will improve with age, typically lasting up to 25 years from the vintage.
