Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 'Malandrino', Cataldi Madonna, 2022, Cataldi Madonna
Here we have one of the finest expressions of Abruzzo black fruits dominates the palate, think cherries and plums, followed by floral and spice notes. The palate is dense and complex with lovely fine tannins, and lots of earthiness and spice.
------
Cataldi Madonna produces some of Italys greatest wines of today and is regarded by wine experts as not only one of the top wineries in Abruzzo, but in Italy as well. Second generation winemaker, Luigi, followed in his fathers footsteps and brought the estate, which was originally founded in 1920, to stardom.
After the discovery and restoration of some historic cement tanks found at the winery, the wine became completely un-oaked from 2012, and now the wine is aged fully in cement tanks for 12 months before bottling.
The winery is situated in Ofena, a small town in Italys Abruzzo region, at an altitude of over 300 metres above sea level. Situated at the foothills of the only Appenine glacier on Calderone in the Gran Sasso mountain range, Ofena is located in an area known as the oven of Abruzzo. Thanks to the extraordinary solar exposure, high temperature variations, and soil characteristics the area is particularly suited for viticulture.
Certified organic wine.
