Four bottles of thest best that skin contact wine has to offer
Skin-contact/orange wine/amber wine - whatever you want to call it - it's emerging in our consciousness as an acceptable form of wine, no longer just weird stuff you didn't want to drink when you visited your mates in Hackney. Skin-contact wines vary in style enormously - so there's a whole new world of wine to explore in the genre. Here we present four of our absolute favourites that we think are a great introduction to the world of all things orange.
Oniric Brisat, Entre Viynes
Light skin-contact orange wine from Penedes in Spain - this is a great introduction into the world of orange wine. There's stone fruit aromas and light savoury spice. It's a light, easy-going orange wine that's elegant and balanced.
Sketta Grecanico, Cantina Marlina
The Sketta has such a wonderful nose, with apples, cinnamon and a whisper of honey. There's textural richness and savoury notes of spice. Cantina Marilina is run by sisters Marilina and Federica Patern, who have been farming organically since the vineyard was established in 2001.
Curtido, Folias de Baco
Made from Moscatel grown in Douro, Portugal, which brings a super-interesting counter-point between fruit and savoury notes. Try with dishes that have this interplay - tagine and biryani, for instance, are great matches for this wine.
Cataratto, Baglio Antico
Easy and delicious, perfect orange wine from the heart of Sicily. Not too wild here, just a lovely bit of extra flavour and a hint of texture from the skins. Think ripe stone fruits, pear skins, ginger and spice. Tannins are smooth-as-you-like.
