A top-selection of three of our favourite, top-shelf, warming reds, taking in the best that Europe has to offer.
2018 Les Piliers de Maison Blanche, Bordeaux - 26.00 23.40
Maison Blanche are part of a new breed of Bordeaux wineries eschewing the use of chemicals in the vineyards and farming using organic & biodynamic practices. The result is a serious wine that speaks of classic Bordeaux, but in the same breath has freshness, energy and a complete charm that marks it apart from its peers as a modern-classic. Made with Merlot and Cabernet Franc - this is sumptuous, velvety right-bank Bordeaux with aromas of plum, spice, cedar and wood-smoke.
2019 Valdaya, Ribera del Duero - 40.00 36.00
Made by a husband and wife team and limited to just 8 barrels each year, this comes from some of the very best vineyards in Ribera del Duero. The wine is crafted from Tempranillo vines with over 100 years of age, giving incredible concentration to the fruit. The majority of the wine is aged in new oak, which gives supple, soft tannin, notes of coffee, cedar, spice amongst a core of black fruit. Valdaya is a rising star and one to watch for the future - exceptional.
2016 Bilaccio, Il Borghetto - 39.00 35.10
Ethereal, elegant and sophisticated - this is such a wonderful take on Sangiovese. There's an almost a pinot-like quality to the nose, with. sumptuous notes of red cherry, cloves, dried red flowers, orange peel, and spice. On the palate it's more classically Sangiovese with rich texture, heaps of complexity and grippy tannin. With over 6 years ageing - this Sangiovese is really starting to sing, from Soprano to Baritone, and everything in between. Il Borgetto are situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, but they make wines in their own distinctive style and don't seek the approval of the Chianti appellation. The estate farm biodynamically, and produce very limited quantities of exceptional wine.
