Gerhard Pittnauer: Winemaker, Art Lover, Music Fanatic – all round cool dude.
Winemaker, art lover, and music fanatic (yep, he’s got a pair of Technics set up in his winery), for Pittnauer, winemaking is less craft—more art form. His whole approach blends art, wine, and music seamlessly, creating a unique atmosphere that reflects in his winemaking.
Gerhard Pittnauer has been farming biodynamically since 2006, rooted in the Burgenland region of Austria. Pittnauer grows a full range of white grapes, including Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, and Sauvignon Blanc, alongside Austria's iconic reds like Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. The region's terroir—a combination of lake effects, warm days, and cool nights—helps craft wines with depth, balance, and bright acidity.
Vinifying healthy grapes as soon as possible after harvest is so central to his philosophy that he built a winery in the middle of his vines. The winery itself functions as part gallery, part tasting room, where sofas, neon walls, and art installations meet winemaking. In the corner lie two Technic 1200s and a vintage Vestax mixer—highly prized among audiophiles, making Pittnauer's winery a very fun place to visit indeed with tasting sessions rolling long into the afternoon!
